These are questions we are asked all the time while doing balloons for an event or a party.
Do you fingers hurt?
Not really, it is your feet that hurt when standing in one place. Your fingers get dry. The key is to learn how to tie balloons properly.
How much does your balloon pouch weigh?
John has the largest balloon pouch with the most balloons in it. His pouch weighs about 9.5 pounds. Most everyone else's pouches weigh about 6.
How many balloons do you make per hour?
We can make roughly about 25 balloons an hour per person. This all depends on the complexity of the balloons made and if the balloons cooperate fully.
What is the easiest balloon you make?
A dead worm - haha -
What is the most complicated balloon you have made?
We have made a few larger balloons, like the motorcycle John is riding in his profile picture on the home page. We have made an intricate crucifix that we used to tell the Bible story to the children at our church's Easter Egg Hunt. Another interesting balloon we made was a giant cake for a parade float. Andrew made a race car that was about eight feet long when he was in eighth grade for his school's talent show contest. Many of these balloons can take four or five hours to construct.
How did you learn to do balloons?
Clara's brother, Brad Belding, went to a conference to learn to be a better Sunday School teacher. He learned a simple sword and a simple dog. From there, they got books from the library to learn more. John quickly joined in learning different balloon twists and shapes. They found videos that showed complex balloons (this was before YouTube). Brad and John even attended a balloon twisting conference (Yes, they have those!). Soon, everyone joined in the fun.
How do you remember all the balloon items?
Sometimes, it can be challenging to remember the ones we don't make often. Most of our balloons are made from about seven different twists. It is just the different how we use those few twists to create each unique balloon. Each of the balloon artists have their own way of doing balloons, too. There are many conversations of who does what better.
How long does it take to learn?
It really isn't super difficult to learn balloon twisting. With a few hours, we can teach someone the basics. Practice is the key. It can take about two months of practice to get someone to the point where they can help in our balloon lines.
How can you twist the balloons so they don't pop?
There are some key factors that prevent balloon popping.
You have to have good quality balloons. We order ours from LaRocks.
You can't overfill the balloons. Many times we need to start over with a balloon because we can feel that we filled the balloon too much. The air needs to the space to expand.
The weather can make a big difference. When it is too hot outside, the balloons can pop easily. This is why we transport our balloons in coolers.
Sharp element can definitely pop balloons. We always warn customers to be careful around grass because it will pop them. We round the tips of our Sharpie markers to keep them from popping the balloons. We also trim hangnails before twisting to avoid popping that way.
